We liked this quote because it sums up much of what we believe and strive towards as architects.

Long term value is impossible without sensory appeal, because if design doesn’t inspire, it is destined to be discarded. “In the end,” writes Sengalese poet Baba Dioum, “we conserve only what we love.” We don’t love something because it is nontoxic and biodegradable - we love it because it moves the head and heart….. When we treasure something, we’re less prone to kill it, so desire fuels preservation. Love it or lose it. In this sense, the old mantra could be replaced by a new one: If it’s not beautiful, it’s not sustainable. Aesthetic attraction is not a superficial concern- It’s an environmental imperative. Beauty could save the planet.

A Contested Landscape

As part of the 10 Days on the Island Festival, Domain House will be open to the public and act as the backdrop to a number of installations. The catalogue reads:

“A group of noted artists use the building as their ephemeral gallery to consider the concept of nature and culture, traditionally seen as opposites, a divide separating the wild from the tamed.

Guided by curator Noel Frankham, Professor of Art with the University of Tasmania, some of the artists explore the history, characteristics and fabric of Domain House while others respond to the exterior environment.

Artists featured in the exhibition include Lisa Anderson, Lucy Bleach, Patricia Brassington, Lindsay Broughton, Steven Carson, Ruth Frost, Megan Keating, Milan Milojevic, Brigita Ozolins, Geoff Parr, Troy Ruffels, Marie Sierra, David Stephenson, Lucia Usmiani, John Vella, Martin Walch and Paul Zika.”

Cumulus Studio’s contribution to the exhibition can be seen here

Elizabeth Walsh
